Help Build Software That Makes the Web More Accessible
Equalize Digital is on a mission to make the web more accessible. Our software helps organizations identify and fix accessibility issues before they become barriers for real people. Our flagship product, Accessibility Checker, empowers businesses, universities, government agencies, nonprofits, and web professionals to identify and fix accessibility issues directly within WordPress.
We’re looking for a WordPress Software Engineer who enjoys solving challenging technical problems, building polished software, and using modern AI-assisted development workflows to deliver meaningful results.
We’re looking for an engineer, not just a programmer. Someone who enjoys solving difficult problems, taking ownership, and helping shape the products they build.
About the Role
This is a varied engineering role that spans both our software products and client services.
Our engineering team doesn’t work in silos. We believe building great accessibility software starts with understanding the real-world challenges our customers face. As a result, the balance of work naturally shifts throughout the year.
You’ll spend much of your time building new features, fixing bugs, improving performance, and enhancing our products. At other times, you’ll investigate customer issues, perform accessibility remediation, contribute to client projects, or help solve complex technical challenges.
This variety gives every engineer a deeper understanding of our products, our customers, and the accessibility problems we’re working to solve.
What You’ll Do
- Design, build, and maintain WordPress plugins.
- Develop new features for Accessibility Checker and future products.
- Build modern interfaces using JavaScript and React.
- Debug and resolve complex technical issues.
- Review code and collaborate on architectural decisions.
- Improve automated testing, tooling, and deployment processes.
- Investigate customer-reported issues and compatibility problems.
- Perform accessibility remediation on client websites.
- Contribute to legacy client projects when needed.
- Continuously improve the quality, performance, and usability of our software.
How We Build Software
AI is a normal part of our engineering workflow. AI accelerates our work, but it never replaces engineering judgment. We expect every engineer to understand, validate, and improve the code they ship.
We regularly use tools like ChatGPT, Claude, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, and other AI assistants to:
- Explore implementation ideas.
- Debug complex issues.
- Generate tests and documentation.
- Refactor code.
- Learn unfamiliar APIs.
- Eliminate repetitive work.
We’re looking for someone who embraces AI as a productivity tool while applying strong engineering judgment. Great engineers know when AI is helpful and when it needs to be challenged.
What We’re Looking For
Required
- Strong WordPress development experience.
- Experience building or maintaining WordPress Plugins.
- Professional experience developing with PHP.
- Strong JavaScript skills.
- Experience using Git in a collaborative environment.
- Excellent debugging and problem-solving skills.
- Strong written communication.
- Ability to work independently in a remote environment.
- Willingness to work across both product development and client services.
Preferred
- React experience
- TypeScript
- Gutenberg / Block Editor development
- WordPress REST API
- Composer
- PHPUnit or automated testing
- GitHub Actions or CI/CD
- Accessibility experience (WCAG, ARIA, semantic HTML)
- Experience contributing to open source
You’ll Thrive Here If You…
- Enjoy owning problems from concept through release.
- Like learning new technologies.
- Appreciate thoughtful code reviews.
- Care about writing maintainable software.
- Are comfortable switching between product work and customer-facing development.
- Want to understand the people using the software you build.
- Enjoy collaborating with AI rather than avoiding it.
- Value accessiblity, usability, and quality.
