SUMMARY:Quick Accessibility Audits: Gen Herres
DESCRIPTION:The most common question regarding accessibility is\, “How bad is a given site\, and what’s it going to take to fix it?” Most people would like to get at least a ballpark answer without spending $1\,000. This session will cover how we use a quick audit to answer these common questions and move forward on solving accessibility issues. \n\nHow accessible or inaccessible is a given website?\nHow do you determine your major pain points?\nHow do you identify which parts of your site are causing the most accessibility issues?\nHow do you use this information to choose what direction to take in remediating the site?\n\n\nThese meetups take place via Zoom and are live captioned. You must register to attend via Zoom. \nAbout Gen Herres\n\nGen Herres is the owner of Anphira\, LLC\, and organizes the Baltimore WordPress meetup group. Before getting into WordPress development more than a decade ago\, Gen was a developer for Boeing on the B-1 Bomber and a lecturer at Ohio State University in the computer science department. \nGen has been featured in podcasts and won the 2022 Member of the Year award in the #1 WordPress community. She is very active in WordPress groups\, encouraging other developers & designers. She has been incorporating accessibility into websites for a couple of years now and is a strong advocate of processes that move accessibility to earlier points in a project and make accessibility easier to understand for novices. \nEvent Information\nSponsors\nThank you to our sponsors: \n\nLive captions: IvyCat\nOrganizer and post-event transcription: Equalize Digital Accessibility Checker\nYour Business here! Learn about sponsorship\n\n\n\n\nAccessibility & Accommodations\nThis meetup will be held virtually over Zoom and live captioned\, thanks to our sponsors. SUMMARY:Mobile Accessibility: Building and Testing Accessible Mobile Sites and Native Apps with Gian Wild
DESCRIPTION:Unfortunately\, when developing WCAG2\, the Working Group did not envision the current world where mobile is almost ubiquitous. For example\, on a mobile device\, there is no continual access to a keyboard (unless someone is using it as an add-on to the device – or using a Blackberry Classic.) WCAG2 requires that all content be accessible to the keyboard interface\, but it does not require that all content be accessible to a mouse or to a touchscreen user\, which is essential on a mobile device. WCAG2.1 does include some mobile accessibility requirements but doesn’t go far enough. \nGian Wild chaired the Mobile Site Sub-Committee to develop a set of Mobile Site Testing Guidelines available under Creative Commons. These guidelines are meant to be used with WCAG2 (and WCAG2.1) to ensure that sites are accessible to people with disabilities using mobile and tablet devices. \nAccessibility is important to all – not everyone using your mobile app\, device\, or wearable will be fully functioning\, either because they have a disability or they are engaged elsewhere. Gian talks about the things that are essential to avoid when designing mobile apps\, devices\, and wearables to ensure that everyone can use them. She talks about specific mobile accessibility features: pinch zoom\, native screen readers\, haptic keyboard\, etc.\, and system accessibility settings: font size\, screen rotation\, high contrast\, etc. \n\nThese meetups take place via Zoom and are live captioned. You must register to attend via Zoom. \n\nAbout Gian Wild\n\nGian Wild is the CEO\, Founder and President of AccessibilityOz\, established in Australia in 2011 and the United States in 2015. Gian has worked in the accessibility industry since 1998. She worked on the first Level AAA accessible website in Australia (Disability Information Victoria) and developed one of the first automated accessibility testing tools\, PurpleCop\, in 2000. \nShe spent six years on the W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines Working Group\, contributing to the development of WCAG2\, and is currently a member of the Automated WCAG Monitoring-Community Group. Gian is on the Higher Education Content Steering Group for Accessibility Switchboard and a committee member of the ICT Accessibility Testing Symposium conference in the United States. She also chairs two of the symposium’s sub-committees: the Mobile Testing Sub-Committee and the Native App Testing Sub-Committee. The committees work to create up-to-date mobile accessibility testing guidelines. \n\nEvent Information\nSponsors\nThank you to our sponsors: \n\nLive captions: GoDaddy\nOrganizer and post-event transcription: Equalize Digital Accessibility Checker\nYour Business here! Learn about sponsorship\n\n\n\n\nAccessibility & Accommodations\nThis meetup will be held virtually over Zoom and live captioned\, thanks to our sponsors.
